Sony Ericsson’s original Android phone is promised a mid-summer bump to OS version 2.3

Good news, today, for owners of Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 Android smartphone” Gingerbread is on the way.

It seems like it was just yesterday that I was able to bring my X10′s operating system out of the dark ages (Cupcake/Android 1.6) into the middle ages (Eclair/Android 2.1). It wasn’t really yesterday – but was a few short weeks ago.

Now, Sony Ericsson is making good on the promise they made in March that they would be able to provide users with a summer release to the next level.

On their blog, today, developers announced they’re putting the final touches on a X10 update to Android Gingerbread. They’re promising that it will begin to roll out to users in early August.

Sony Ericsson says the upgrade will answer complaints from users concerning functionality changes in the upgrade to Eclair including retention of the original camera UI and the inclusion of the “Facebook inside Xperia”functionality.

As they announced earlier, most of the 2011 Xperia software functions will be included in the upgrade. And, apps that require Android 2.2/2.3 for installation (that means Adobe Flash) will finally be supported.

They’ve also been working on adding DLNA but it will not make it into the upcoming software revision.

Sony Ericsson stresses that this upgrade will be for X10 phones and not the X10 mini or X8. Those handsets had less operating memory inside and will remain firmly rooted in Android 2.1.
