RIM to benefit from Apple’s patent attacks on Samsung

By , 7 September, 2011, No Comment

In a note to investors on Tuesday, Gus Papageorgiou of Scotia Capital sees Apple’s multiple complaints against Samsung as potentially opening doors for the struggling BlackBerry maker. As Samsung’s latest devices continue to be targeted by patent complaints filed by the likes of Apple and Microsoft, Research In Motion may reap the benefits of these numerous quarrels.  He also notes that the new BlackBerry Bold 9900 is already selling well in Europe, however, which means RIM’s potential benefits from the impending ban on Samsung smartphones could be icing on the cake.Pointing specifically to Apple’s recent win barring the sales and marketing of several new smartphones by three European Samsung subsidiaries, Papageorgiou believes sales of RIM’s new BlackBerry 7 devices will be bolstered by the void these devices will leave in certain regions of Europe if the ban goes into effect on October 13th as scheduled. Read on for more.

“These initial victories for Apple do not bode well for Samsung especially in the European market where its market share has moved from 5.0% Q2 last year to 18.8% this year,” the analyst wrote. “In addition to these legal issues, we believe the BlackBerry Bold 9900 is already outselling the Samsung Galaxy S. Based on GSM Exchange’s website, which tracks the top 3 most actively traded devices in Europe, the Bold 9900 is now in the #2 position ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S II and behind the iPhone-4 16Gb.” Papageorgiou raised his price target on RIM stock to $46 from a previous target of $35.60, and he upped his rating to Outperform from Sector Perform.

Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G Touch is available for pre-order from Wirefly for $50 off

The Samsung Epic 4G Touch (aka Sprint’s variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II) is available for pre-order from Wirefly for only $149.99.

That’s $50 off the price Sprint will sell the highly anticipated smartphone for when it hits store shelves in the next couple of weeks, SprintFeed reports.

In other words, early adopters get a break for once. And by early I mean early for North America. The Galaxy S II has been available in Europe for quite some time.

Still, this is definitely a big deal becaue that $149.99 will buy you a lot of smartphone for your money. The specs on the Samsung Epic 4G Touch include a 4.52-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, an 8 megapixel rear camera, 2 megapixel front-facing camera, Gingerbread 2.3.4 and, of course, Sprint’s 4G WiMAX connectivity.

If you are interested in the phone on Sprint, it’s probably a good idea to head on over to Wirefly and jump on this one – there’s no telling how long the deal will last.

Mysterious Samsung Slider now going by ‘Stratosphere;’ Pantech Breakout also gets another look

Samsung Stratosphere

Astute Android Central readers will recall the phone you see above as the Samsung SCH-i405, which we first brought you a full picture of way back in July, looking very much like an LTE version of Sprint’s Epic 4G. And now it’s back in a clearer render form, pretty much looking how we last left it, only now going by its "Stratosphere" name.

Pantech BreakoutNo real change in specs, so far as we unofficially know. You’re likely still looking at a 4-inch(ish) slider with what our original tipster believed may be a Super AMOLED Plus screen (or maybe it’s just the shine of a qHD resolution), with about 2GB of storage, a 5MP camera on the back and 1.3MP shooter on the rear. Plus it’s got 4G LTE data. Huzzah.

Then there’s there’s the Pantech Breakout, seen here at right. That’s another one we broke the news on a week or so ago. It’s got a 4-inch display at the usual 480×800 res, with a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 390 MB of internal storage and an 8GB microSD card. It’s got a 5MP shooter on the back and a VGA camera up front. It’s also a 4G LTE device, serving as a mobile hotspot for up to 10 devices. It’s rocking a custom skin atop Android 2.3.

Still no official word on when either of these could be launched.
