Samsung has announced that its Galaxy S II is the company’s fastest selling smartphone to date

Samsung has announced that it’s Galaxy S II has shipped a whopping 5 million phones in only 85 days – making it the company’s fastest selling smartphone to date.

And it hasn’t even launched in the U.S. yet. Though it is important to keep in mind that these figures represent shipped units, not end user sales.

Korean news agency YonHap first announced the news of Samsung’s success. The company now claims a 56% market share in South Korea.

To put things into perspective, CNET UK points out that Apple sold 18 million iPhone 4s / iPhone 3GS globally in the first three months of 2011 – though most of those sales were in the US.

And there’s no denying that the original Samsung Galaxy S did very well in the States.

With specs like a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus display, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread, we would expect more of the same.

Keep in mind that the Galaxy S II was recently outed for AT&T and it has already cleared the FCC, so we would expect it to drop in the US sometime in the very near future.
