The Gingerbread update should include a new, refined Android UI, an updated menu system, and an updated version of Samsung’s TouchWiz skin

According to a report from SprintFeed, Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G is going to be finally updated to Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread later this month. The update could roll out as soon as July 24th, the report says.

Android 2.3.3 will bring with it some definite improvements, particularly in the power management department. Background apps will close automatically if left idle for too long and there’s some serious speed improvements. The TouchWiz user interface will also change quite a bit.

That said, Android 2.3 was announced a while back, way back in December of 2010 actually, so this update is taking quite a while. No word on what is taking Samsung and Sprint so long, but it probably has something to do with TouchWiz. Porting TouchWiz from Android 2.2 to 2.3 is a considerable effort.

Either way, if everything goes as planned, Epic 4G owners are going to get Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread very soon!
