Leaked screenshots reveal that speech-to-text functionality from Nuance is coming to the iOS 5 and the iPhone 5
Leaked screenshots have revealed that Nuance-powered speech-to-text functionality is on its way to iOS 5 and the iPhone 5.
If you have Android phone, you are already familiar with this feature. Speech-to-text is deeply integrated into the Android OS for searching the web, sending text messages and the like.
Apple’s service will be backed by Nuance – the company behind Dragon Dictation and Siri. When it comes to speech recognition software, Nuance is as good as it gets right now.
It’s also important to point out that Apple is planning to integrate the Siri assistant into IOS 5 as well.
The leaked screenshots come via a “reliable source” at 9to5Mac, and the procedure is pretty much what you would expect:
Just click the microphone icon next to the space key and start talking. Once the key is clicked, a new microphone overlay will appear as long as you are talking. After that, the text will appear in the text field…
9to5Mac notes that the speech-to-text function will be limited to the iPhone and the iPod touch. So far, there is no word on when or if it will ever be implemented into the iPad.
Currently, these speech recognition functions are not available in the iOS 5 beta builds, but we are hoping that will change sometime in the near future. Either way, we don’t have much longer to wait as iOS 5 will make its official debut in September.
