CyanogenMod shows off the early stages of its CyanogenMod 7 Android build on an HP Touchpad

The dream of booting Android on a $100 HP Touchpad may be on the horizon as Cyanogen shows off the early stages of its CyanogenMod 7 build.

It’s promising for sure, but the Cyanogen team is hoping to deliver a multi-boot ROM that would allow users to choose between webOS, CyanogenMod 7 and more, Android Community reports.

As you may have heard, HP pulled the plug on the Touchpad and dropped the price of remaining units to a ridiculous $100. That sparked a feeding frenzy among consumers trying to get a decent tablet for cheap.

Naturally, getting a successful build of Android on the device would be icing on the cake, and there are plenty of hackers out there working on that problem at this very moment.

However, there are a few obstacles in the way – most notably a lack of avaiable tablets. The price drop meant units sold out quickly and CyanogenMod (along with other developers) are having trouble getting ther hands on units for testing.

CyanogenMod explains the situation via Slashgear:

“It will certainly be a long while before our goals become reality” CyanogenMod warns, and so we probably shouldn’t expect anything too quickly. It’s also worth noting that, currently, the ROM they’re using is Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, not Honeycomb.

That’s a bit disheartening, but CyanogenMod says that they want to do this right, not fast.

Still, if you were lucky enough to score an HP Touchpad for cheap, you probably already know that it is a capable tablet even without Android.
