Price drop leads to Nintendo 3DS sales boom in Japan

By , 17 August, 2011, No Comment

Nintendo’s recent decision to drop the price of its Nintendo 3DS handheld gaming device looks to have paid off. In the device’s first full week of sales following Nintendo’s price drop, the company sold 215,000 units in Japan alone, where the 3DS now retails for 15,000 yen following its launch at 25,000 yen. Weekly sales of the portable 3D console dipped from 31,826 units to 16,415 in the week following Nintendo’s announcement that the price would soon drop, for obvious reasons. With sales in Japan having exploded by more than 13 times in the week following the 3DS price drop, it looks like the initial high price point may have been a big factor in the 3DS’ slow adoption up to this point. Nintendo lowered the price of its 3DS from $249.99 to $169.99 on August 11th in the U.S., so this week will mark the first full week of sales at the new lower price point here in America.

RIM-Research In Motion-BlackBerry-Bold-Sprint

The Torch 9850 and Bold 9930 both feature a 1.2GHz single-core processor and RIM’s all-new Liquid Graphics technology

Sprint has announced that it will launch Research In Motion’s latest CDMA smartphones — the BlackBerry Bold 9930 and the BlackBerry Torch 9850. The devices are launching August 21st and will cost users 249.99 and $149.99 respectively.

For those in the dark, the Bold 9930 is RIM’s brand new touch-and-type OS 7 flagship handset. The device previouslylaunched on rival carrier Verizon Wireless yesterday at the same $250 price point.

As GottaBeMobile points out, that price is going to be an absolute problem for a lot of people that were hoping to get their hands on this sexy handset. $250 for a smartphone with the Bold 9930′s specs is quite a bit.

With the iPhone 5, Droid Bionic, and the Galaxy S II launching soon, it’s hard to justify shelling out this much money BGR comments. A phone that has those specifications just isn’t enough.

Thankfully, RIM is also launching the Torch 9850, a handset CNET calls an “affordable touchscreen with fast graphics”. It also seems to have an exremely solid build quality.

Both handsets run RIM’ latest BlackBerry 7 OS and are part of the largest global launch in the company’s history.

Sony slashes PlayStation 3 price

By , 17 August, 2011, No Comment

Sony has announced a significant global price cut for the PlayStation 3 console.

At the Gamescon 2011 keynote SCEE President Andrew House confirmed that the 160GB model will now cost €249 in the EU and $249 in the United States.

Although there was no mention of a price cut in good old sterling, Amazon and Dixons responded by dropping the price of both the 160GB and the 320GB models as Sony’s conference began.

Amazon now asking just £192 for the 160GB model (down from an RRP of £249), which is the first time the console has crept under the £200 mark in the UK.

(UPDATE: Sony has confirmed to CVG that the new UK RRP for the 160GB model is £199)

320GB trimmed too

The 320GB model has also been trimmed and will cost just £215.20 (down from an RRP of £285)

Sony added that the price cuts, which are also effective in Japan will apply immediately.

So, if you’ve been biding your time to splash out on a PlayStation 3 then that time has arrived.
