Dutch Apple enthusiast site AppleSpot is reporting that Apple will launch a 3G iPod Touch sometime in September. Similar to options available for the iPad 3G, users would have the option of buying a 3G iPod Touch directly from a wireless carrier or at an Apple Store.
We’re expecting a possible iOS device refresh sometime in the fall, so it’s certainly possible that Apple is considering creating a Touch with a 3G radio. It would be wonderful for those of us who don’t really need voice minutes.
Such a device could also help carriers lock in more data plans and would give Apple an immediate boost in iOS marketshare. Definitely necessary considering all of the cheap Android handsets coming down the pipeline.
At this point, all we really have is this report and it doesn’t really help that AppleSpot doesn’t have a proven track record. It’s not that they were wrong in the past, it’s just that they are new on scene.
Despite my doubts, here’s to hoping our friends over at AppleSpot are on to something big! A 3G-enabled iPod Touch would be superb.
